I am considering ordering a set of Rapport Oracle Lite shafts, has anyone
ever used them on any clubs before? If so, how were they? Also, I am
wondering which clubhead would be the best choice, The Penick Master,
Classic Player, or XPC Plusa heads. I am looking for a little more
forgivness and a club that will shape shots well. Thanks for the help,
if
you have any sugestions please tell, I have never delt with clubmaking before!

It's all part of doing business. Most imports are dutiable at port of
entry or receipt.

I have not used the Rapport shafts. I have made irons with the Pennick
Master and XPC Plus heads. The XPC Plus are very forgiving while I found
the
Penick Master easier to shape shots with. My knowledge of the Pennick
Classics is limited, but I believe they are not very forgiving but better
yet for shaping shots. You may want to consider the Golfsmith Sterling and
Nighthawk heads also. I find they have a pretty good combination of
forgiveness while allowing you to shape your shots.

Does anyone use the Golfsmith length fitting chart to make irons (Golfsmith
chart is 1/2 inch longer than the standard chart)? I have found that the
standard fitting chart seems to be closer to what feels comfortable. In
other words, if you are making a set of irons for someone who has a finger
tip to floor measurement of 28 " (1 inch longer than average), what
length
would you suggest 1/4 inch over, 1/2 inch over or 3/4 inch over ?

I also use heel toe putters, but I did try several mallet putters in the
Golfsmith store last week. My favorite is the Golfsmith Insulator. It is
a
mallet with a thin layer of rubber between the steel face and the mallet
head. It felt very nice and putted more acurate than any of the mallets
I tried.
I may buy one for the days that my regular putter goes on vacation.

Just came back from the old golf course playing with an uncle. We were tied
going into the 18th hole. I drove within 30 yards of the green and he hit
into the trees. He called a mulligan and drove again not counting the first
ball. Anybody know where the "Mulligan" came from ? I remember
reading
about President Clinton taking an executive Mulligan a couple of weeks ago.

Subject: ShopTalk: Ferrules
Can anyone give me some advice about ferrules? I recently made a
Golfsmith Grand Titanium Driver which requires a ferrule. My problem was
that I had to smooth the ferrule down a bit to match the OD of the hosel.
I used acetone to accomplish this task but found the ferrule was not as
smooth as I would have liked when I was finished. It seemed to be
scratched. Is there anything I can use to buff it so as it looks and
feels smooth and shiney again?

It's amazing, isn't it?
I have never seen Mulligans mentioned in any rule book.
If a person continues to take Mulligans, how does that person know whether
they are doing better or not.
We have this person on our foursome that plays twice a week. He not only
takes Mulligans, he doesn't count all of his strokes.
Since we all know that, we don't really consider his score when we see who
has won the round. (if he only knew)
He continues to play on the foursome because we like him.
Mulligans were probably invented by the wee people who live in the woods.
If you ever meet them, ask to see their rule book.

In using the acetone did you use a very soft cloth and a most delicate
finishing touch? If using acetone, have the cloth saturated at finish
and use ever decreasing pressure (I have had ferrules come out looking
like glass using this method.) As far as the cloth that is used I
usually
use an old cotton sock turned inside out (works for me)
Also!!!! When using acetone make sure you have PLENTY of ventilation, no
open flames or sources of sparking around, & Always wear chemical
resistant globes
Hope this helps

When this happens to me, I soak a small portion of a soft cloth with acetone
and rub the ferrule lightly and rapidly. I immediately dry it off by rubbing
harder with a clean, dry cloth. After that, the ferrule shines like new.

Subject: ShopTalk: I Need Some Help
Dear Clubmakers,
I'm working on a mathematical model of a golf shaft that will
eventually help determine how to tip and butt trim a shaft to get a
club with known frequency characteristics. That is, to create a
set of clubs that are frequency matched as well as swing weight
matched.
At this stage in the development, I need to make sure that my basic
model is sufficiently accurate to proceed. That's where you can
help me. I need you to make a few measurements of an uncut, raw
shaft and then of the same shaft after tip and butt trimming.
All measurements should be as accurate as possible. Length
measurements should be estimated to 0.01 inches. Weight
measurements should be estimated to 0.1 grams. COG is the distance
from the butt to the center of gravity or balance point.
Please reply directly to me at CEELY@DA486F.WIN.NET. Please do NOT
reply to Shop Talk. I only need one measurement set from each
person.

The XPC Plus irons/woods are very popular. I have made 2 sets of XPC Plus
irons and about 15 woods. I have used the XPC Bulge shaft in most of the
woods. I have also used the Aldila Low Torque Plus shaft with good success.
The Harvey Penick head looks very nice. I like hitting it but haven't found
too many others that like the feel.
Prices are as follows (close) Wood Head Iron Head
XPC Plus $26.50 $ 9.25
Harvey Pennick $33.50 $15.50
Copperhead $23.95 $ 8.25
Don't know about the others.
