*I just built my wife 3,5,7,and 9 woods using golf smith components.
*I used Aldila Low Torque Lady shafts. The triming instructions say
*to not trim more than three inches. The wood shafts come out of the
*box at 44 inches.
*My calculations say that the lady's nine wood should end up at 38
*inches total club length.
*Obviously, I can't make it work and stay within the 3 inch maximum
*trim. Should I use iron shafts that come at 39 inch length for the
*high lofted woods?
*.....Mike

The reason for not trimming more from the tip is due to the shaft
taper. These type shafts are called unitized or parallel, meaning
the tip diameter is the same for some length before it begins to
taper(apperantly the Aldila shaft increases diameter after 3 in).
If you trimmed more than the recommended length the shaft wont
properly fit in the hosel. The instructions should also tell you
to tip trim for flex and butt trim for length.

You cant substitute an iron shaft for a wood shaft because the
tip diameters are different.

Hope this helps.

Is there any difference between shaft epoxy and the epoxy you get at
your local hardware store?

Greetings,
I have only been on this list for a short period of time but really enjoy it.

I haven't put together my first club yet -- im getting ready....

Has anyone ever played the Golfsmith O/S Project? Its a LH model and comes in
a slightly flatter lie (59 deg. on the 5-iron) and since im only 5'4 i hope
that might save me time/money bending the heads. If y'all can recommend a
cavity backed, peripheral weighted iron that comes in LH from somewhere else
- -- im all ears.

And, has anyone any experience with the True Temper Gold Plus shaft? Worth the
$?

Of course, any advice on making that first set of irons is appreciated (and
yes, I am only going to start with 1 club!) Thanks, in advance

I would think that $150-200 is a fair price. BTW, I tried the clubs and was
hiiting them very well. I have heard good things about these clubs on
GOLFonline. I just made myself a set or I would have bought these. If you

YES!

Most epoxy manufacturers have several epoxies.

'Hardware Store' epoxy tends to be 'general use', i.e. moderate strength,
moderate temperature range, etc.

Shafting epoxies tend to be designed for 'HIGH SHEAR STRENGTH',
they tend to be a bit softer, less brittle, and remain stable
for higher temperature ranges than 'general use' epoxies.

(Why high temperature range?--think of the heat that develops in your truck
in the summer, and the other extreme in the winter...).

The "5-min" epoxies tend to be a bit more brittle, and are generally
O.K. for putters, and in a pinch for any other club, but I wouldn't
count on it for years of use and thermal stress...

The O/S Project irons are what I use. I am very pleased with them!

I constructed them with a Dynamic Gold Stiff Shaft. I love the performance of
the shaft but I found them to be too heavy in the fact I was having to control
the swing (and club) with my arms too much causing my swing to be inconsistent.

Due to lack of time on my part, I had a professional clubmaker to go back and
put in Dynamic Lite shafts, which gave me better results in the area of
consistency.

I am not familiar with the Dynamic Gold Plus shafts but I hope what I have said
will help some.

I'm not left handed, but I do play the O/S Project irons from Golfsmith.
IMO, it is a terrific iron and I have loved playing with it the last two years.
A friend of mine is left handed (but slightly taller than you) and bought
standard lie O/S Projects as well. He too enjoys them very much. The O/S Project
irons are oversized and have a deep cavity. Golfsmith must be commended on making
some very well designed irons.

As a matter of fact, my O/S Projects are fitted with Gold Plus R300 shafts.
I beleive that the shaft is the engine of the club. Although the O/S Projects are
good heads, IMO, the right combination of shaft and head is the secret. This
combination of R300 and O/S P seems to work very well for me. As far as I am
concerned, the Gold Plus is a light weight steel shaft that is worth every cent.
Your mileage may vary.

I am willing to help you out with this, but I'll probably need a half
hour atleast to write down some of the tips and tricks I use to assemble clubs.
Perhaps, I will write up something at home this weekend and post it later next
week. I am sure that others in this forum might have some info for you as well.

BTW, if you do end up making a new set of O/S Project irons, get ready to
recalibrate your distance chart. The O/S P's are stronger lofted clubs (King
Cobra like) and therefore you probably will find yourself hitting a 7I when
you may have hit a 6I with a more traditionally lofted set (If thats what you
are currently playing with).

All said and done,

O/S Projects + TT Gold Plus = Great Clubs

I'm sure you will enjoy them. BTW, I am in no way affiliated with Golfsmith.

Regards

Raj

I'll try to keep this short, but will probably be unsuccessful! I've used
the Golfsmith Sterling irons for two weeks. I built them with plans to sell
them later, but now am seriously considering keeping them. Why? Here goes:

I've been playing Harvey Penick Master irons for the past 2 seasons.
(Golfsmith Carbon Stick Filament Wound shaft R-flex.) My divots have been
deep toward the toe indicating that I need a more upright lie. My plan was
to send them in to have them bent 2 degrees upright. I didn't want to be
without clubs for the 3 or 4 weeks that they'd be gone, so I started paging
through the Golfsmith catalog for something I could build for a good price,
use for a few weeks, and then sell. I chose the Sterling mostly because it
is already 2 degrees upright from the Penick Master. This would give me a
chance to try the more upright lie. I decided to go with the Carbon Tour
5.0 shaft because it's on special for $10.95 and has pretty good spec's for
a "cheap" graphite shaft. (Even though Golfsmith promotes this shaft for
mid to high handicappers, I'm an 8 handicap.)

Here's the shocker: I'm hitting the Sterlings as well as I've ever hit the
Penick Master's. They feel very solid on the sweet spot and off center
hits. I've been very pleasantly surprised! My plan now is to try to sell
the Penick Master's and keep the Sterlings. (Incidentally, this is meant to
take nothing away from the Penick Master's. I've loved them since I started
using them. The difference is that I have more than double the money tied
up in them. The only draw back is that I've really become attached to my
Penick Master 11 iron. Sterling doesn't have one. Hopefully, soon...)

One additional note: I have a smooth swing, and even though my swing speeds
are up there, I prefer a more flexible shaft. I tip trimmed the Carbon Tour
5.0's 1/4 inch less than specified. They "feel" great!

I hope this helps...

Would like to read any comments on the above "essay"!
