Measure and cut shaft to finished length-insert the trimmed/abraded
shaft into the clubhead; measure and mark the butt of the shaft at the desired
playing length, subtracting 1/8" to allow for the grip cap, and cut
using the using the same techniques used for tip trimming.
Golfsmith suggests the following standard playing lengths for their clubs
with steel shafts. Playing lengths for many graphite shaft woods and irons
can be increased 1/2"-1".
Mens Irons
1 Iron 40.0"
2 Iron 39.5"
3 Iron 39.0"
4 Iron 38.5"
5 Iron 38.0"
6 Iron 37.5"
7 Iron 37.0"
8 Iron 36.5"
9 Iron, PW, SW, UW 36.0"
Mens Woods
1 Wood 43.0""
2 Wood 42.5"
3 Wood 42.0"
4 Wood 41.5"
5 Wood 41.0"
6 Wood 40.5"
7 Wood 40.0"
Every 1/2" increase in playing length increases Swingweight 3 points.
Every 4 gram decrease in grip weight increases Swingweight 1 point.
Example: My Penick Master 5 Iron, Brunswick Rifle Steel Shaft, and 50 gram
Lamkin grip has a swingweight of D2 at 38.0 inches. If I increased the 5
Iron final playing length to 38.5" the swingweight would be D5 (and
the shaft flex would change to more flexible).
